Privacy Policy — Retentive for iOS

Last updated: 3 July 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how the Retentive app for iPhone and iPad ("the App", "we", "us") handles your information. It applies only to the iOS app — the Retentive website and web app are covered by a separate policy.

The short version

Retentive does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any of your personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, and no servers. Everything you create in the App stays on your device. That's it.

What information the App stores

The App stores the content you create so it can work as a study tool. This includes:

  • Your subjects, topics, and learning items
  • Your review history, schedules, and progress
  • Focus-session history
  • Your settings and preferences

All of this is stored locally on your device. It never leaves your device except through actions you take yourself (see "Backups and exports" below). We cannot see it, and it is not sent to us or to anyone else.

What we do not collect

To be completely clear, the App does not:

  • Require or create an account
  • Collect your name, email address, or contact details
  • Use analytics, tracking, advertising, or third-party SDKs
  • Collect device identifiers for tracking (no IDFA, no fingerprinting)
  • Send your study content, usage, or any personal data to us or to any server
  • Contain any code that makes network requests to our servers (we don't operate any)

Notifications

If you enable reminders, the App schedules local notifications on your device to remind you to review. These are created and delivered entirely on your device by iOS. No reminder content is sent to us or to any external service.

Purchases

Retentive offers a one-time "Pro" upgrade. All purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store using Apple's In-App Purchase system. We never see or receive your payment information (card details, billing address, etc.). Apple processes the transaction and tells the App only whether the Pro upgrade is unlocked. Your purchase is tied to your Apple Account. Apple's handling of this is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

Backups and exports

  • You can export your data to a file from within the App. When you do, that file goes wherever you choose to save it (for example, the Files app or iCloud Drive). That is your copy, under your control — we are not involved and never receive it.
  • You can import a previously exported file back into the App.
  • If you have iCloud Backup or device backup turned on in your iOS Settings, iOS may include the App's on-device data in your device's encrypted backup. This is a standard iOS feature controlled entirely by you and Apple — the App does not run its own cloud sync and does not send your data to us.

Your control over your data

Because everything lives on your device, you are always in control:

  • Use the Delete all local data option in Settings to erase your content within the App.
  • Delete the App to remove all of its on-device data from your device.

There is no server-side copy for us to hold, because we never receive one.

Children's privacy

The App does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children. It contains no ads, no data collection, and no external links to user-generated content.

Third parties

The App does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or data-collection services. The only third party involved is Apple, solely to process In-App Purchases and to deliver the App through the App Store.

Changes to this policy

If we ever change how the App handles data, we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date above. Because the App is local-first by design, we do not anticipate collecting data in the future without clearly disclosing it here first.
